For a fuller discussion of what to expect from a first appointment and whether private treatment is worth it, see our guide: How Much Does a Podiatrist Cost? →

NHS podiatry

NHS podiatry is free at point of use but access has narrowed significantly in most areas. Services are now largely limited to high-risk patients — primarily those with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or other conditions where foot complications carry serious medical risk. Routine care such as nail trimming, callus, and corns has been removed from NHS provision in most areas.

To access NHS podiatry, speak to your GP for a referral.

Foot health practitioner costs

Foot health practitioners typically charge less than podiatrists for routine care: around £30–£45 for a 45–60 minute appointment. Many FHPs offer mobile home visits, which can be particularly convenient for elderly patients or those with limited mobility — often at comparable or lower cost than a clinic appointment.

For routine nail care and foot maintenance, an FHP may offer good value. For complex conditions or anything requiring diagnosis, a podiatrist is the appropriate choice. See Podiatrists vs Foot Health Practitioners → for full guidance on which to choose.

Does private health insurance cover podiatry?

Many private health insurance plans and cash plans include podiatry. Simplyhealth cash plans explicitly list podiatry and chiropody as covered treatments. Check your policy details or contact your insurer directly — cover varies considerably between providers and plan levels.
